During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation in July, 1863, setting aside a day of thanksgiving, principally to acknowledge the United States' victories on land and sea. This different proclamation was issued on October 3rd, 1863.

Memorial Day honors those Americans who gave their lives for their country in war.  First observed in Waterloo, New York, on May 5, 1866, to honor those who fell in the Civil War, it has been observed annually since 1868.  On May 30, 1884, the great Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., then a Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court gave the following speech in Keene, New Hampshire.
